I first started this blog in December 2011 with the intent of showcasing and researching character based art.
When asked why I was so drawn to character design I used to simply reply "I like things with faces".
Less flippantly phrased, I have always been interested in what goes on in our heads when we look at characters and they look back at us: we may see expressions of emotion, of identity, representations of a style or brand, or we may self-insert and see our emotions expressed, our identities represented.
A well known quote from Scott McCloud's book Understanding Comics describes these processes in the context of graphic novels and comics: “When you look at a photo or realistic drawing of a face, you see it as the face of another. But when you enter the world of the cartoon, you see yourself.”
